The most striking difference from earlier rifles are the internal lock construction. It was designed by the armourer Christian Wilcken Kyhl (1762-1827). In addition of the apparent advantage of being less vulnerable to rain and dust, the lock was ligther and less susceptible to malfunction due to fewer parts. In an ordinary lock there are 12 parts and 10 screws, in Kyhls lock it was 9 parts and 6 screws. The main spring and the frizzen spring were replaced by one spring. Further, the different screws were all so different that they could not be confused with each other.
